Best Time to Visit Serengeti

Cayegory: Safari

The Serengeti National Park is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to experience. Each season offers its own remarkable highlights, from dramatic wildlife spectacles to lush green landscapes.

June to October (Dry Season):
This is the most popular and rewarding time for game viewing. With minimal rainfall, vegetation is sparse, and animals gather around rivers and waterholes, making them easy to spot. The weather is mild and pleasant, with cool mornings and warm afternoons. During this period, the Great Migration is often seen in the northern Serengeti, particularly between July and September, when millions of wildebeest and zebras cross the Mara River — one of the most breathtaking natural events in the world.

November to December (Short Rains):
These months bring light rains that transform the plains into a lush green paradise. It’s a quieter, less crowded time to visit, and the scenery is beautiful. Wildlife remains abundant, and migratory birds start arriving, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Roads remain accessible, and prices are generally lower than during the dry season.

January to February (Calving Season):
In the southern Serengeti, especially around Ndutu, thousands of wildebeest give birth during this time. It’s an extraordinary sight, attracting predators like lions, cheetahs, and hyenas in large numbers. The landscape is vibrant and photogenic, offering exceptional opportunities for photography and witnessing the raw drama of nature.

March to May (Long Rainy Season):
This is the least crowded period due to heavy rains, which can make some roads muddy and difficult to navigate. However, it’s the most affordable time for safaris and perfect for travelers seeking solitude. The scenery is lush and beautiful, birdlife is at its peak, and photographic conditions are ideal with dramatic skies and rich colors.
