Encompassing 3% of the land mass of the island and spread over 10 square km the Jozani Forest is the only indigenous forest in Zanzibar and is part of the Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, the only national park on Zanzibar. The diverse habitat of the park comprises of grasslands, coral rag forests, salt marshes, groundwater forests besides mangroves which provide sanctuary to an impressive array of flora and fauna.

It is home to 100 tree species including the 200-year-old Mama Mtondoo, a stately mahogany tree and is also the last sanctuary in the world for the rare and endemic Kirk’s red colobus monkey and the Blue Sykes Monkey. You can also catch the Bush Pigs, Aders Duiker and Sunni Antelopes, Elephant Shrews, mongoose, bush baby, tree hyrax, civet, the small Zanzibar leopard, and Chameleons etc on the fascinating nature trails of the park.
